Placement survey Back to top TOP Introduction Welcome to the 2022 Placement Survey. Please read and digest all the information below before responding to the questions. Unlocked Graduates’ mission is to reduce re-offending for all prisoners, regardless of location, category and demographic. We expect our participants to be committed to this vision and be willing to work in the prisons where they are needed most. Wherever possible we take your preferences into consideration, but for the reasons above, we expect all participants to be flexible in terms of where they are placed during the leadership development programme. We ask you to share any preferences you have in this survey. Which prisons do we place in and when does this process happen? We will meet with prisons in the new year to discuss placements for 2022 and normally confirm most placements around Spring. Many prisons do not make decisions on required staffing until this point and this may fluctuate in the lead up to Summer Institute so you could receive a placement at any point. There is no guarantee that we will be placing in the same prisons as last year, so please view this process with fresh eyes without considering last year’s placement prisons. Please remember that Unlocked Graduates chooses prisons to go into based on opportunities to help prisoners and build a rehabilitative culture. Although different categories and types of prison can look and feel quite different on the surface, rehabilitation is the common theme in all the prisons we will be working with. Location We will be placing in prisons in London, the South East (mainly Thames Valley), the North (mainly North West and Yorkshire) and the West Midlands. All of the prisons that we work with are relatively close to main railway stations. Please note that we do not place in all types of prisons in every region. We ask below whether the type of prison or location is your priority so that we can understand your preferences as well as possible. Type of prison (male, female, or youth) We place in prisons for adult men (18+), adult women, and young men (age 15-18). Men’s prisons include all security categories except for open prisons. As a reminder, you can find out more about the different types of prisons by watching Max, Tracey, Jacob, and Zoe and Beth talk about working with men, young people and women respectively. If you are interested in working in the youth estate, you would be working with some of the most vulnerable and demanding individuals in custody. Most young people in the youth estate are 15-18 years old, but they can be younger in some institutions. This environment can mean facing different challenges to the adult estate but also offers many opportunities to turn lives around earlier. If you state a preference for working with young people, we will contact you for a follow-up phone conversation. This will allow us to identify the people with most relevant experience and strongest motivations for working with this group. Extenuating Circumstances If you have specific extenuating circumstances, there are opportunities in the questions to set these out. Please be aware that we will ask for evidence of your situation and have an electronic copy of any documents ready to upload.
