It gives prison officers access to high-quality training materials, supporting them to build transformative relationships with some of the most challenging and vulnerable people, ultimately improving outcomes and helping to break cycles of reoffending.

This book codifies everything we have learnt about what the best prison officers do over nearly a decade of delivering our award-winning graduate programme, recruiting and training nearly 900 excellent officers.

This step-by-step guide aims to give frontline staff the tools to master relational practice, broken down into 24 core techniques that anyone can learn and use on the landings. It gives those working in prisons the opportunity to take their professional development into their own hands so that they can improve their practice, ultimately transforming outcomes for those in their care.

Our hope is that anyone working on the frontline of prisons – or supporting and coaching those who do – can use this resource. These techniques could also be used to develop other professionals working in similar environments where relational practice can be transformational, such as the police and probation.

We know how important it is to create mental models for the techniques outlined in this book in order to effectively build them into everyday practice.
